Research Fellow – Advanced Materials Synthesis Lab

About the role

The Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials (I-FIM) at the National University of Singapore is establishing a state‑of‑the‑art material robotics laboratory for advanced synthesis and testing of functional materials. We seek a highly motivated materials expert to lead the strategic development, day‑to‑day operations of the lab, and oversee an established furnace cluster.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the commissioning and management of a fully automated MOCVD platform, associated gas‑handling systems, glovebox, and in‑situ testing equipment.
• Develop and execute a research roadmap for AI‑guided autonomous synthesis using CVD and high‑temperature platforms.
• Create SOPs, safety protocols, and maintenance schedules to ensure EHS compliance across all equipment.
• Oversee procurement, qualification, calibration, and lifecycle management of furnaces, reactors, and robotic systems.
• Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and AI teams to integrate machine learning and active‑learning strategies into closed‑loop materials discovery workflows.

Required profile

• PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or related field (or substantial industry experience).
• Proven track record in solid‑state or thermal synthesis techniques such as CVD, tube furnace synthesis, rapid thermal annealing, ampule synthesis, self‑flux, or CVT.
• Experience establishing new laboratory infrastructure and managing complex research projects.
• Strong communication and collaborative skills, with ability to supervise interdisciplinary teams.
