Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow, Systems Neuroscience or NeuroAI

About the role

The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) at Nanyang Technological University is seeking a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow to join the Neuroscience and AI Research (Nair) group, led by Nanyang Assistant Professor Aditya Nair. The group studies how machine learning models and neural circuits in the brain process emotional states, combining systems neuroscience tools with new AI methods. The position is based at the NTU Novena Campus.

Key responsibilities

• Systems neuroscience track: perform in-vivo neural recordings in rodent models of social behaviour and decision making.
• NeuroAI track: analyse high-dimensional brain data, document results and carry out an independent research project.
• NeuroAI track: develop and apply machine learning and computer vision methods such as large-language and vision-language models for high-throughput analysis of video data.
• NeuroAI track: apply data-driven dynamical system modeling tools with specialized software to elucidate neural computations involved in emotion.
• Prepare and contribute to grant applications and conference presentations, and write and draft research publications in top neuroscience and AI journals.
• Attend weekly lab meetings and journal clubs and present data and/or papers as needed.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree (PhD) in systems neuroscience, computational neuroscience, AI or ML, or a relevant field; interdisciplinary backgrounds are invited.
• Strong numeric and analytical background.
• Competence in information visualization; a working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator is a strong advantage.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Required skills

• Systems neuroscience track: experience with stereotaxic surgery in rodents, optogenetics and in-vivo microendoscopic imaging; large-scale electrophysiology with silicon or Neuropixel probes is highly advantageous.
• NeuroAI track: strong programming in Python and MATLAB; familiarity with large-scale neural data (imaging, electrophysiology, video) is highly desirable.
• NeuroAI track: proficiency in deep learning, computer vision and UI frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenCV, PyQt and Gradio.
