Research Scientist – Satellite Communications

About the role

Temasek Laboratories at NTU is seeking a Research Scientist to advance satellite communications research for the Singapore defence community. The role focuses on passive detection, classification, and geolocation of unknown ground terminals using LEO non‑terrestrial network (NTN) signals in challenging environments.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct theoretical and experimental research on passive detection, classification, and geolocation of satellite communication terminals.
• Design and execute R&D activities, validate methods with real data, and publish scientific contributions.
• Supervise interns and students, review literature, and support research proposals.
• Perform administrative duties such as safety and asset management as assigned.

Required profile

• PhD in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Communications, or a related field.
• Strong publication record appropriate to career stage.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting complex technical concepts.

Required skills

• Statistical signal processing, estimation theory, detection and classification, waveform‑based geolocation.
• Machine learning / deep learning applied to passive localization and tracking.
• Experience with LEO NTN systems (e.g., Starlink, Iridium) and signals of opportunity.
• Proficiency with SDR platforms, especially Ettus USRP devices, and GNU Radio/UHD programming.
• Programming in Python and/or MATLAB; C++ is a plus.
• Knowledge of satellite communications systems, NTN architectures, satellite ephemeris correction, and orbital simulation tools (STK, GMAT, Orekit).
