Senior Backend Engineer, Core Services

About the role

Rakuten Viki, a global entertainment streaming platform specializing in Asian content, is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer based in Singapore. The role reports to the Engineering Manager and focuses on designing, building and evolving the backend systems that power Viki's global streaming platform. The team develops and maintains large-scale distributed systems covering APIs, business intelligence, user and communication systems, monetization and subscriptions, video encoding and content delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Own multiple services or functional areas within a platform subsystem
• Drive end-to-end delivery of features and technical initiatives, from design and development through testing, deployment and post-release support
• Design and implement high-quality, scalable, reliable and maintainable backend systems
• Evaluate technical complexity, trade-offs and risks and communicate them to stakeholders
• Troubleshoot production issues and own the health and reliability of assigned services
• Review code changes, give actionable feedback and uphold engineering quality standards
• Contribute to architecture discussions, engineering guidelines and backend best practices
• Mentor junior engineers through technical guidance, code reviews and knowledge sharing
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners and continuously improve system performance, observability, scalability and developer productivity

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• 6-9 years of professional software engineering experience
• Strong experience designing, building and operating large-scale distributed systems and microservices
• Ability to drive technical projects independently and make sound engineering decisions in ambiguous environments
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams

Required skills

• At least one backend language such as Go, Node.js, Ruby or Python
• Relational databases such as PostgreSQL and/or MySQL
• Messaging systems and caching such as RabbitMQ and Redis
• Cloud platforms such as GCP and/or AWS
• Linux/Unix, networking fundamentals and backend performance

Preferred: experience with large-scale consumer products, video streaming, media platforms, content delivery or encoding, improving service observability, mentoring engineers and learning new technologies quickly.
