Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist - Genomic Diagnostics (Contract)

About the role

The Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) at NUH is hiring a Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist for bench work, data analysis and orthogonal confirmation. The role supports the wet-lab section of the newly set-up Genomic Diagnostics Lab (GDL), which serves the National University Centre for Genomic Medicine (NUGEM) and the National Precision Medicine initiatives. It covers wet-lab processing, primary bioinformatics and methodological validation and verification.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, strategise and oversee wet-lab processing for advanced genomic services, including sample processing, library preparation and sequencing, and validation and verification of test protocols.
• Troubleshoot and optimise laboratory assays using sound scientific principles.
• Analyse primary data and design primers and probes using bioinformatics tools, including SNP-ID analysis.
• Supervise the lab's participation in external quality control programmes to meet clinical and regulatory standards.
• Mentor and train Medical Laboratory Technologists and Scientists in wet-lab and bioinformatics processes.
• Work with clinicians, laboratory staff, operations and administration to deliver integrated services.
• Take part in laboratory management, including human resources, staff development and strategic planning.

Required profile

• Class Honours degree, BSc, MSc or PhD in genetics, genomics, human genetics or a related biological or life science field.
• At least 10 years of experience in wet-lab processing and methodological verification.
• Strong technical expertise in molecular biology and NGS workflows.
• Attention to detail, ability to troubleshoot and optimise protocols independently, and effective communication and documentation skills.

Required skills

• Quality management systems, including ISO 15189 and/or CAP compliance or equivalent.
• Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and data interpretation.
