Senior Software Engineer (Backend, Contract)

About the role

Rakuten Asia Pte. Ltd., the regional headquarters for Asia based in Singapore's Central Business District, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer focused on backend services within its Global Ad Technology Department. This is a 1-year contract position. The role covers designing, developing and maintaining scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot, and involves turning business requirements into technical solutions while keeping systems stable and reliable.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop high-quality, scalable and maintainable backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
• Translate complex business requirements into robust technical designs and efficient code.
• Take part in the full web application lifecycle: architecture design, middleware selection, development, configuration, release and system operations.
• Investigate root causes of issues and work with the team to recover proactively, owning service and system stability.
• Propose new technologies and tools to improve architecture, system capability and development efficiency.

Required profile

• 5 years of professional experience in web application development with Java and Spring in a microservices architecture.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field.
• Ability to analyse technical trade-offs and make informed software design decisions.

Required skills

• Proficiency in REST API development, including OpenAPI specifications, ORM frameworks and database schema design.
• Advanced SQL, including complex queries.
• Experience with unit testing frameworks such as JUnit.
• Ability to design system architectures and evaluate and integrate open-source software.
