Assistant Director / Deputy Director, Analytics & Insights

About the role

STB is looking for an Assistant Director or Deputy Director of Analytics & Insights to oversee the compilation, analysis and reporting of key tourism statistics and to turn data and research into actionable insights that guide internal teams and external industry stakeholders. The role also involves coordinating with information agencies across Whole-of-Government and leading a high-performance analytics team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead data cleaning, exploration, ingestion, compilation and analysis to support tourism performance measures such as Visitor Arrivals, Tourism Receipts and Hotel Statistics.
• Direct data collection and analytics strategies, including data wrangling, statistical and analytical methods and data visualisation to communicate findings.
• Deliver tourism performance insights to stakeholders and monitor reporting, publications and data requests.
• Maintain key databases used for analysis and oversee project management, including contract and vendor management, data quality, dataset development and dashboard enhancement.
• Collaborate with product managers, data scientists and engineers to integrate and deploy models and dashboards, and provide data advisory support to internal and external stakeholders, including assessing economic contributions of major tourism projects.
• Gather intelligence on emerging issues and provide actionable insights, and lead the analytics team in operational data analytics.

Required profile

• Training in Data Analytics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Economics or a related quantitative discipline.
• At least 8 years of experience in data analytics, interpretation and visualisation, including at least 3 years leading teams.
• Strong foundation in data analytics methodologies, market research methods and statistical modelling and forecasting.
• Experience integrating research and data from multiple sources, engaging diverse stakeholders and presenting to senior management.
• Fluency in English, written and spoken.

Required skills

• Proficiency in analytics tools such as R, SQL and Python.
• Statistical knowledge and comfort working with large datasets.
• Project and time management, strong presentation skills and ability to work under pressure.
