Associate Professor – Neurosymbolic AI

About the role

The School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW seeks an Associate Professor to lead research and teaching in Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence. This senior academic position will shape the strategic direction of AI research, integrate machine learning with symbolic reasoning, and enhance the school’s reputation nationally and internationally.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct high‑impact research on neural‑symbolic integration, knowledge representation, and hybrid AI architectures.
• Secure competitive research funding and lead interdisciplinary research initiatives.
• Supervise higher degree research students to successful completion.
• Deliver high‑quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and contribute to curriculum development.
• Engage with industry partners and promote the school’s research profile.
• Participate in academic governance, strategic planning, and program development.

Required profile

• Established academic with a strong, sustained record of high‑impact publications in Neurosymbolic AI.
• National or international reputation in neural‑symbolic methods, reasoning under uncertainty, and interpretable AI.
• Proven ability to obtain research funding and lead research teams.
• Experience supervising graduate students and delivering university‑level teaching.
• Demonstrated leadership within the discipline and collaborative mindset.
