Data Engineer Intern

About the role

Tencent's Weixin Group (WXG) builds and operates the Weixin ecosystem, including Official Accounts, Mini Programs, Weixin Pay, WeCom and search, and also develops QQ Mail and WeRead. As a Data Engineer Intern you will support the development of backend services and APIs for WeChat's product and data needs, and help build and maintain large-scale data pipelines.

Key responsibilities

• Support the development of backend services and APIs to meet WeChat's product and data needs.
• Build and maintain large-scale data pipelines for ingestion, transformation and analytics across distributed systems.
• Work with the data platform team to optimise storage and query performance on systems such as ClickHouse, Hive and Apache Iceberg.
• Contribute to real-time data streaming infrastructure using tools such as Apache Pulsar or Kafka.
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions with product and data teams.
• Take part in code reviews and system design discussions while learning quickly.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics or a similar quantitative field.
• Fluency in both English and Mandarin to work with international teams and stakeholders at HQ.
• Self-driven, detail-oriented and eager to learn in a fast-paced collaborative environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one backend language: Python, Java, C/C++ or Go.
• Familiarity with big data tools such as Spark, Hive, Iceberg, ClickHouse, Kafka or Apache Pulsar is a strong plus.
• Understanding of distributed systems concepts (data partitioning, replication, fault tolerance) is preferred.
