Deputy Director, South Asia, Middle East and Africa Division

About the role

The Deputy Director leads the South Asia, Middle East and Africa (SAMEA) Division within the Trade and International Economic Relations cluster of Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry. The role is pivotal in shaping Singapore's foreign economic policy, expanding market opportunities, and strengthening bilateral and regional economic ties.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and analyse geostrategic and economic developments in SAMEA markets and assess implications for Singapore's trade and investment.
• Develop, implement and review policies, strategies and initiatives that enhance Singapore’s economic relations with countries in the region.
• Represent MTI in visits, meetings, negotiations and conferences, and lead discussions with international counterparts where required.
• Build and maintain networks with foreign government agencies, private firms, business chambers, think‑tanks and academic institutions.
• Drive talent management, staff capability development and succession planning for the division.

Required profile

• Strong interest in international relations and economics.
• Excellent analytical, writing and communication abilities.
• Proven leadership and supervisory experience with a collaborative approach.
• Ability to travel regularly and work in a fast‑paced environment.
• Prior experience in policy development or implementation, especially related to the SAMEA region, is advantageous.
