Equipment Engineer 1

About the role

Illumina is hiring an Equipment Engineer 1 to provide technical leadership in R&D laboratories. The engineer defines and performs preventive maintenance on optical, mechanical, electrical and fluidics systems, improves equipment uptime and reliability, and applies organic chemistry principles to troubleshoot lab equipment process issues.

Key responsibilities

• Define and perform preventive maintenance on optical, mechanical, electrical and fluidics systems
• Troubleshoot process and equipment issues using mechanical, optical, fluidics and organic chemistry knowledge
• Perform basic computer and software troubleshooting
• Develop, write and update manuals and procedures
• Train other engineers and lab personnel on procedure, process and equipment changes
• Work in a team to improve equipment reliability and uptime
• Run controlled experiments (including DOE's) to address equipment-related yield and quality issues and implement solutions in production
• Source alternative replacements for obsolete parts and manage changes through change management

Required profile

• BSc/B.Eng in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or a diploma with at least 15 years of relevant experience
• Experience in semiconductor industry or with laboratory equipment and fabrication best practices is advantageous
• Experience with opto/mechanical/electrical systems, fluidics and organic chemistry processes (preferably DNA-related)
• Ability to work independently and good inter-departmental communication and documentation skills

Required skills

• Strong mechanical aptitude
• Experience writing procedures and training others
• Basic computer troubleshooting skills
• Statistical Process Control, JMP and DOE techniques (a plus)
• Familiarity with Illumina sequencers (a plus)
