Industrial Designer

About the role

Menlo Research is building Asimov, an open‑source humanoid robot platform. As an Industrial Designer you will shape the physical identity of Asimov and future hardware, ensuring the product looks, feels and functions well in real‑world conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Define the industrial design vision for Asimov and other Menlo hardware, covering form, proportion, ergonomics and CMF (color, material, finish).
• Translate engineering constraints and functional requirements into manufacturable, visually coherent concepts.
• Create high‑fidelity 3D models, renderings and physical prototypes to communicate design intent.
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers on DFM reviews, tolerance stack‑ups and assembly sequencing.
• Own the CMF specification process, including material selection, surface‑finish standards, colour systems and supplier engagement.
• Contribute to user‑facing documentation, packaging and unboxing experiences for kits and development hardware.
• Maintain design consistency across an expanding hardware portfolio.

Required profile

• Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design or a related discipline.
• 4+ years of experience delivering physical products such as consumer electronics, robotics or medical devices.
• Proven ability to work closely with mechanical engineers and contract manufacturers in an iterative development environment.
• Portfolio demonstrating a consistent design sensibility applied to technically constrained products.

Required skills

• Strong proficiency in 3D modeling tools (e.g., Alias, Rhino, SolidWorks or equivalents).
• Experience with rendering software such as KeyShot or similar.
• Working knowledge of manufacturing processes: injection molding, sheet‑metal fabrication, die casting and surface finishing.
• Familiarity with DFM/DFA review processes.
