Lead Software Engineer (Java) - Vice President

About the role

Citi is hiring a Lead Software Engineer (Java) in Singapore, a senior engineering and architectural leadership role acting as a regional anchor for its global Client Risk and Position Management technology organization. The role is hands-on: the principal designer, systems architect and lead engineer for mission-critical, low-latency, high-throughput risk platforms powering real-time credit checks, intraday position aggregation, margin valuation, anomaly detection and live risk limit enforcement. It involves close collaboration with global teams across Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build distributed, fault-tolerant, high-concurrency risk calculation and position management engines, writing, reviewing and optimizing high-performance, multi-threaded Java code (Java 17/21+), with C++ and Rust where needed.
• Champion AI-augmented engineering workflows such as GitHub Copilot, Devin and AI-driven code review to modernize legacy components and speed up delivery.
• Design low-latency, event-driven pipelines using Apache Kafka, Solace PubSub+ and similar middleware.
• Profile and tune CPU usage, memory layout, GC overhead, network serialization and IPC for microsecond-level latency.
• Act as technical contact and SME for Risk Managers, Product Owners, Trading Desks, Quantitative Analysts and Operations, and interface with OMS, EMS, market data feeds and clearing/settlement and regulatory reporting platforms.
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers, lead architectural design reviews and peer code reviews, and work with engineering managers and Scrum Masters on sprint planning and delivery.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or an equivalent STEM discipline; Master's degree desirable.
• Experience in distributed systems, clean code practices and low-latency systems.

Required skills

• Modern Java (17/21+), JVM internals, memory management, profiling, lock-free data structures, concurrent programming and low-latency tuning.
• Desirable: practical C++ (14/17/20) and/or Rust, including JNI and FFI.
