Mechanical Engineer II – Scientific Instruments

About the role
Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to contribute to the design and development of sophisticated scientific instruments and laboratory equipment. You will work within a cross‑functional team to create reliable, manufacturable mechanical systems that support the company’s mission of making the world healthier, cleaner and safer.
Key responsibilities
- Assist the mechanical lead on assigned projects and adhere to project timelines.
- Generate conceptual proposals and conduct mechanical design reviews.
- Create 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, Pro‑Engineer) and establish modular designs with complete BOM structures.
- Develop sub‑assembly test plans, execute tests and report results.
- Ensure designs are robust, integrated into the overall architecture, and meet DFM and quality standards.
- Collaborate with vendors on design‑for‑manufacturability and cost negotiations to achieve target COGS.
- Contribute technical knowledge to the R&D portal and support technology development initiatives.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in mechanical product development and lifecycle design.
- Proven ability to design casting, machining, plastic molding, and sheet‑metal parts using DFM practices.
- Strong understanding of GD&T and project management principles.
Required skills
- SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D CAD) modeling.
- Pro‑Engineer/Creo proficiency.
- Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Design for Manufacturability (DFM) techniques.
- Mechanism design.
- CFD and flow/thermal simulation.
- Mechanical design experience in medical or life‑sciences R&D environments.
