Medical Laboratory Assistant - Department of Laboratory Medicine (Contract)

About the role

The Department of Laboratory Medicine at NUHS is hiring a Medical Laboratory Assistant on a contract basis. The role performs laboratory diagnostic procedures and related activities to deliver a quality laboratory service to internal and external customers.

Key responsibilities

• Receive laboratory specimens via the pneumatic tube system, reject unsuitable ones and sort samples into collection bins by division before dispatching them to the right stations.
• Operate the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for order entry, sample receipt and result queries where required.
• Process and sort simple samples such as blood, urine and other body fluids, and manage sample movement between the Sample Manager, aliquoter, off-line analysers and other locations.
• Answer customer enquiries about sample movement at reception, escalate unclear cases and resolve queries.
• Perform basic rapid tests and alert laboratory staff of critical values.
• Carry out preventive maintenance on instruments, report malfunctions, notify staff when test kits, reagents or supplies need re-ordering, and report adverse incidents to senior staff.
• Perform shift work as required and keep up with new instrumentation, techniques and procedures through workshops, seminars and in-service education.
• Comply with good laboratory practice per the College of American Pathologists accreditation programme and Singapore regulators, the Laboratory Safety Manual and the DLM workplace etiquette.

Required profile

• Higher NITEC qualification.
• Relevant clinical laboratory experience is an advantage.
• Good laboratory skills.
