Research Assistant – Asian Languages & Cultures

About the role

The National Institute of Education seeks a Research Assistant for a 7‑month fixed‑term project in the Asian Languages & Cultures Department. The role focuses on documenting and analysing Rebana Singapura, a Singaporean adaptation of traditional Malay percussion, and its contribution to social cohesion.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct literature reviews and fieldwork to capture the historical evolution and contemporary practice of Rebana Singapura.
• Collect, organise, clean, code and manage qualitative data from interviews, surveys and observations.
• Apply thematic analysis and other qualitative methods to identify key patterns and insights.
• Prepare research reports, presentations and academic publications based on findings.
• Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of all research materials.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Malay Studies or a related discipline.
• Strong interest in Malay cultural heritage, traditional performing arts and community‑based research.
• Excellent analytical, critical‑thinking and written communication skills.
• Meticulous, organised and able to work independently on large data sets.
• Ability to handle confidential or sensitive research materials.

Required skills

• Proficiency in English and Malay for data analysis and interpretation.
• Experience with qualitative research methods such as coding and thematic analysis.
• Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software, preferably NVivo.
• Competence with digital tools for data management and research coordination.
