Research Engineer I (Trust Technologies)

About the role

Nanyang Technological University's National Centre for Research in Digital Trust (DTC) is looking for a Research Engineer to design, develop and deploy LLM-powered AI agents that transform core insurance workflows such as underwriting, claims, policy servicing, risk assessment and customer engagement. The role builds autonomous, multi-agent systems that interpret insurance documents, apply policy rules, support decision-making and run end-to-end processes, while ensuring reliability, compliance and human oversight.

Key responsibilities

• Translate research into working prototypes of LLM-powered AI agents and multi-agent systems, explaining how research outputs can become new insurance capabilities.
• Work with centre researchers to turn research into system implementation, supporting underwriting, claims, policy servicing and risk assessment.
• Design and build agent tools and evaluation frameworks to transfer AI capabilities to research partners and showcase their value.
• Write and maintain technical documentation, presentations and papers on AI agent design, evaluation, guardrails and trust mechanisms.
• Engage global partners and researchers to follow trends in LLMs, agentic AI and insurance technology.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline; LLM or AI agent research experience preferred.
• Ability to explain complex AI and LLM research concepts to stakeholders, engineers and business users.
• Experience in insurance, financial services or other regulated domains is preferred.

Required skills

• Hands-on experience with large language models, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, agent frameworks and multi-agent system design.
• Proficiency in Python and common AI/ML tools, with production-grade AI applications, APIs, evaluation pipelines or agent orchestration.
• Understanding of AI safety, guardrails, model evaluation, monitoring, data privacy, explainability and responsible AI in regulated environments.
• Knowledge of system platforms, databases and software engineering best practices.
