Research Engineer II - Digital ATCO Assistant (AI)

About the role

ATMRI at NTU is looking for a Research Engineer II to join the Digital ATCO Assistant project. The role develops intelligent assistants for air traffic management by combining large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents, operational data and user-facing applications.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and integrate AI-enabled applications for the Digital ATCO Assistant project.
• Build end-to-end systems combining LLMs, RAG, AI agents, tool calling, workflow orchestration and operational data sources.
• Integrate AI components with existing enterprise systems via APIs, databases, authentication and message-based services.
• Develop backend services, user interfaces and system connectors for prototypes and pilots.
• Implement evaluation, logging, monitoring, traceability and feedback mechanisms for AI-assisted workflows.
• Work with domain experts and controllers to turn operational use cases into requirements and test scenarios.
• Support testing, demonstrations, technical documentation and deployment.
• Contribute to technical reports, project proposals and publications, and collaborate with academic, industry and regulatory partners.

Required profile

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Information Systems or a related field.
• At least one year of relevant experience in software engineering, systems integration, AI application development or enterprise technology delivery.
• Ability to build reliable end-to-end prototypes rather than standalone AI models.
• Good communication skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience or interest in aviation, air traffic management, human-AI teaming or safety-critical AI is an advantage.

Required skills

• Strong experience with Python, backend development, APIs, databases and system integration.
• Experience developing or integrating LLM applications, RAG systems, AI agents or agent orchestration workflows.
