Research Engineer II (Trust Technologies)

About the role

The National Centre for Research in Digital Trust at Nanyang Technological University seeks a hands‑on Research Engineer to develop AI components for a trust‑focused project, building end‑to‑end local large language model (LLM) pipelines and trustworthy AI controls.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement local LLM/RAG pipelines for conversational analysis of large unstructured datasets.
• Fine‑tune and adapt LLM/NLP models using supervised fine‑tuning, LoRA/PEFT and benchmark against RAG/prompting baselines.
• Develop NLP capabilities such as entity extraction, resolution, relationship analysis and other project‑specific analytics.
• Create backend APIs, integrate databases/vector stores, manage local model serving, GPU inference and containerised deployment.
• Implement access control, audit logging, provenance tracking, model isolation and human‑review workflows.
• Conduct systematic evaluation, security/robustness testing, error analysis, performance optimisation and regression testing.
• Maintain reproducible code, versioned models/configurations, experiment records, technical documentation and deployment instructions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, AI, engineering, data science, software engineering or related field.
• At least 4 years of relevant experience delivering AI/NLP solutions.
• Independent, execution‑oriented and able to meet tight timelines.

Required skills

• Strong Python programming.
• Hands‑on experience with LLM/NLP development, RAG and model fine‑tuning/PEFT.
• Proficiency with PyTorch and/or Hugging Face libraries.
• Working knowledge of Linux, Git, Docker, SQL and API development.
• Experience with GPU deployment, vector databases and containerised model serving.
• Familiarity with NLP analytics and trustworthy AI/security controls.
