Research Engineer/Fellow – 5G Software Solutions

About the role

The Future Communications Translation Lab at SIT seeks a motivated Research Engineer/Fellow to bridge rigorous 5G/6G research with practical software solutions. You will work with faculty and industry partners to develop, validate, and demonstrate 5G‑enabled use cases.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with researchers and industry partners to define use‑case requirements, assess feasibility, and propose system architectures.
• Develop proof‑of‑concept applications and working prototypes, integrating software with sensors, cameras, actuators and communication interfaces.
• Incorporate AI models, video processing and streaming capabilities as needed.
• Design and conduct functional and performance tests, troubleshoot integration issues, and refine prototypes for lab experiments, field trials and demonstrations.
• Prepare documentation, technical reports and demonstration materials; support feasibility studies, proposals and publications.

Required profile

• At least 6 years of software development and system design experience, with hands‑on prototype development.
• Bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication and technical writing skills.
• Self‑motivated, team‑oriented and able to work independently.

Required skills

• Programming in Python and C++.
• Understanding of 5G/LTE, Wi‑Fi and wireless networking concepts.
• Hardware‑software integration (sensors, actuators, modems, cameras) via REST APIs, messaging systems or WebSocket.
• Networking fundamentals: TCP/UDP/IP, sockets, VPN, NAT, tunneling, MPTCP, Wireguard, MPQUIC.
• Linux networking tools (iperf, iproute2, nmcli, tcpdump, Wireshark).
• Video capture, encoding/decoding, real‑time processing or low‑latency streaming (preferred).
• AI/ML and computer vision model integration (preferred).
• Experience with ROS/ROS2, embedded systems, real‑time OS or edge computing platforms (advantage).
