Research Fellow (Biogeotechnical Engineering)

About the role

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at NTU is looking for a Research Fellow to join the Centre for Urban Solutions. The project aims to advance engineering solutions that mitigate the impact of climate change, focusing on a cost-effective and eco-friendly method for coastal protection. The role involves laboratory and field testing of sustainable construction materials, writing project reports and scientific papers, and assisting the principal investigator (PI) with proposals and student supervision.

Key responsibilities

• Research the use of nature-based materials to build barriers that reduce coastal erosion, trap sediments and restore land lost to seawater.
• Develop new methods to upcycle solid waste into sustainable material for biocementation.
• Carry out numerical modelling of model tests and analyse and interpret data to recommend designs and optimisation of coastal protection systems.
• Write and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
• Help secure external funding through grant applications and proposals.

Required profile

• PhD in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related field.
• Strong background in biogeotechnics, geoenvironmental solutions and sustainability.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Publication track record is an advantage.
• Ability to work independently and meet strict deadlines.

Required skills

• Expertise in biomineralization and geomaterials.
• Model testing of geotechnical structures such as embankments and retaining walls.
