Research Fellow / Engineer (Product Design) – Mechanical Systems

About the role

The Research Fellow / Engineer (Product Design) will lead the mechanical design of an innovative rapid curtain‑change system for Singapore hospitals. Working within a university research division and in partnership with industry, you will translate clinical requirements into functional prototypes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and CAD modelling of curtain hook mechanisms, track inserts and assistive tools using SolidWorks or Fusion 360.
• Fabricate and assemble prototypes through 3D printing, CNC machining and workshop facilities.
• Convert operational requirements from hospital staff into detailed engineering specifications.
• Conduct mechanical strength, fatigue and ergonomic testing in simulated and real healthcare environments.
• Coordinate user trials, gather structured feedback and report findings to the project team and funding agency.
• Co‑supervise student researchers on final‑year projects alongside the Principal Investigator.
• Manage procurement, liaise with vendors and prepare technical reports and presentations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design or a related discipline.
• Experience in interdisciplinary teams, preferably with healthcare or service‑related projects.
• Self‑motivated with strong communication and problem‑solving abilities.

Required skills

• SolidWorks or Fusion 360 CAD software.
• 3D printing and CNC machining for rapid prototyping.
• Mechanical design, strength and fatigue testing methodologies.
• Ergonomic and human‑factors considerations (advantage).
