Research Fellow – Financial Machine Learning

About the role

The Nanyang Business School at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Fellow to advance its finance research agenda. Working under Professor William Cong, the fellow will apply modern machine learning and econometric techniques to key questions in asset pricing and corporate finance.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct high‑quality empirical research in machine learning for finance.
• Develop and apply advanced quantitative, econometric, and natural‑language‑processing methods using large‑scale administrative and unstructured data.
• Advance an existing research project and initiate one or two additional collaborative projects.
• Prepare manuscripts for submission to leading international academic journals.
• Present findings at conferences, seminars, and internal workshops.
• Support effective project management, ensuring milestones are met and academic standards maintained.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Finance, Economics, Risk Management, Insurance, Statistics, or a closely related discipline from a reputable institution.
• Strong empirical research background with experience in applied econometrics and quantitative analysis.
• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research‑intensive environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated potential for publications in high‑quality academic journals.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python, R, Stata, and MATLAB.
• Experience handling large‑scale datasets, including administrative and textual data.
• Knowledge of machine learning, natural language processing, and advanced econometric methods.
