Research Fellow – Optics Engineering

About the role

The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) at NTU is seeking a Research Fellow to lead the design and fabrication of optomechanical and imaging systems. The role focuses on creating high‑performance optical assemblies that support interdisciplinary biofilm research.

Key responsibilities

• Design and optimise optical systems for high‑sensitivity detection, imaging, non‑imaging and analytical applications.
• Assemble, align and validate optical prototypes for proof‑of‑concept and functional testing.
• Document system designs, specifications and performance data.
• Collaborate with electronics, software engineers and biochemists to integrate optical modules.
• Support the transition from prototype to product‑ready designs.

Required profile

• Master’s or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of experience designing and assembling precision optical systems.
• Strong knowledge of optical design tools (e.g., ZEMAX, CODEV, SPEOS) and mechanical CAD software (Autodesk or SolidWorks).
• Proven experience with optical alignment, stray‑light analysis, mechanical mounts and prototyping.
• Ability to work independently and solve complex design challenges in a multidisciplinary environment.
