Research Fellow – Photonic Integrated Circuits

About the role

We are seeking a Research Fellow to join a Samsung‑funded project at NTU’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The project focuses on comprehensive mitigation of optical back‑reflections in photonic integrated circuits, covering the design, fabrication and characterization of O‑Band quantum‑dot hybrid silicon lasers, silicon plasma dispersive devices and heterogeneous lithium‑tantalate photonic isolators.

Key responsibilities

• Design and simulate O‑Band quantum‑dot hybrid silicon laser structures for back‑reflection‑resilient operation.
• Develop and optimise silicon plasma dispersive devices for on‑chip optical isolation.
• Fabricate heterogeneous lithium‑tantalate photonic isolators using cleanroom micro‑fabrication processes.
• Characterise optical devices, including laser performance, isolation ratio and back‑reflection measurements.
• Analyse experimental data, develop models and understand mitigation mechanisms.
• Prepare technical reports, journal articles and conference presentations.
• Collaborate with project partners to meet milestones and deliverables.

Required profile

• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline.
• Experience in photonic device design, fabrication or characterisation (preferred).
• Familiarity with cleanroom semiconductor or photonic fabrication processes.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
