Research Fellow/Engineer – Inspection Robot

About the role

The Singapore Institute of Technology is seeking a motivated Research Fellow or Engineer to develop an autonomous robotic system for train underframe inspection. The role involves designing, integrating, and testing the robot in real railway depot environments.

Key responsibilities

• Research, design, and develop an autonomous robotic platform for underframe inspection.
• Implement algorithms for localization, navigation, path planning, and obstacle avoidance in complex depot settings.
• Integrate cameras, illumination, LiDAR, depth sensors, actuators, and computing devices onto the robot.
• Conduct laboratory experiments and on‑site trials, evaluating performance metrics such as accuracy, coverage, reliability, and safety.
• Collaborate with railway operators and industry partners to translate existing inspection procedures into robotic workflows.
• Prepare technical reports, research publications, and project deliverables.

Required profile

• PhD (for Research Fellow) or Master’s/Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related fields.
• Hands‑on experience with field robotics, especially industrial inspection or autonomous mobile robots.
• Strong problem‑solving and experimental skills, able to work independently and collaboratively.

Required skills

• ROS/ROS2, SLAM, localization, robot navigation and path planning.
• Robot control, sensor fusion, LiDAR and depth sensing.
• Programming in C++ and/or Python.
• Experience with edge computing platforms, cameras, IMUs and related robotic sensors.
