The branch carries out qualitative and quantitative research to inform food safety risk assessment, risk management and risk communication.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, execute and manage research estimating the health and economic burden of foodborne hazards, using epidemiological and health economic models to quantify disease incidence, health impacts (DALYs, QALYs) and economic costs.
- Design and run population-based surveys and analyse epidemiological and surveillance data to estimate community disease incidence, healthcare-seeking behaviour and case under-ascertainment.
- Develop approaches to estimate the proportion of disease attributable to foodborne transmission, including structured expert elicitation and source attribution methods.
- Manage, analyse and integrate epidemiological and surveillance datasets, applying statistical and mathematical modelling, including sensitivity and uncertainty analyses.
- Analyse associations between risk factors and food safety outcomes to inform policy and interventions.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams, communicate findings through publications, conferences and reports, and support project administration such as procurement and research proposals.
Required profile
- Degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics, health economics or another relevant quantitative discipline.
- Experience in quantitative research, statistical analysis, epidemiological modelling or health economic evaluation.
- Preferred: postgraduate degree (Master's or PhD), experience in burden-of-disease modelling, health economic modelling, population-based surveys, source attribution or structured expert elicitation, familiarity with foodborne disease attribution, prior research in food safety, environmental health or public health, and a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
Required skills
- Proficiency in at least one statistical programming language such as R or Python.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, good written and verbal communication, and project management skills.
