Senior Backend Engineer, Spend Team (Cards)

About the role

Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system used by more than 675,000 businesses to run their financial operations or build their own financial products. The Cards team builds and maintains distributed systems that enable businesses to issue debit cards and manage expenses at scale, supporting millions of card transactions. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Cards team, you will design and build scalable backend systems for card issuance and expense management, work with cross-functional teams, and mentor engineers. The role is based in Singapore.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable, secure backend services that power the Cards product.
• Contribute to the architecture and long-term technical vision of the backend systems.
• Own end-to-end delivery of new features and improvements, from design to production.
• Write high-quality, testable code with attention to reliability and maintainability.
• Promote engineering best practices, including observability and API design.
• Collaborate with product, infrastructure and design teams.
• Mentor engineers and influence the technical direction of the platform.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience designing and building backend systems and APIs in production.
• Preferred: strong focus on performance, reliability and code quality.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go or Python.
• Solid understanding of REST API design and backend frameworks such as Spring Boot.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
• Preferred: familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus and Splunk.
