Senior Fuel Oil Trader
shell · Singapore
Job description
About the role
Global Fuel Oil, part of Products Trading, trades fuel oil, feedstocks and bitumen, with a team of about 25 traders across Singapore, Rotterdam, Houston and Canada. Based in Singapore, you will join a local team of four traders and four analysts and work closely with the bunker sales team. The business has a large physical footprint in Singapore, including more than 1 million cbm of storage, and is a major player in fuel oil blending and bunker supply.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement profitable proprietary paper strategies based on market analysis, clear trade construction and defined risk parameters.
- Manage paper positions with discipline, including position sizing, entry and exit logic, downside assessment and stop or review levels.
- Use paper instruments to express views across cracks, time spreads, inter-product and inter-regional relationships, outright exposure and physical-paper optionality.
- Work with analysts to strengthen supply-and-demand analysis, test hypotheses and develop differentiated signals and strategies.
- Support physical trading across cargoes, blending, storage and bunker outlets, managing exposures from physical and paper positions.
- Identify and develop new customers, counterparties, markets and commercial routes, with personal ownership of building and converting them into profitable opportunities.
- Share market views and trade recommendations with the team, covering thesis, timing, risk-reward, key uncertainties and invalidation conditions.
- Collaborate with operations, risk, finance, credit, legal and compliance to run business safely and efficiently, in line with Shell Business Principles and the Trading Code of Conduct.
Required profile
- Minimum of five years' experience in the fuel oil market, including at least three years in a trading role.
- Demonstrated trading experience in fuel oil, with a track record in paper execution and proprietary strategy development.
- Experience in Asian markets and an established regional network are strongly preferred.
- Ability to explain a disciplined trading process: thesis formation, instrument selection, position sizing, risk-reward, invalidation criteria and response to adverse moves.
- Sound risk appetite and judgment, with the ability to take controlled risk within an agreed mandate.
- Strong analytical and numerical capability, and clear communication of market views and risk internally and to senior stakeholders.
Required skills
- Deep knowledge of Asian fuel oil markets, including HSFO, regional flows, customer segments, bunker markets and the link between physical fundamentals and paper structure.
- Understanding of global fuel oil and oil flows, refinery economics, blending economics and arbitrage relationships.
What we offer
- A competitive starting salary and annual performance-related salary increase.
- Paid parental leave, including for non-birthing parents.
- A wide range of training and development programmes.
- Career opportunities across national and international teams in a values-led, diverse and inclusive organisation.
