Senior Product Engineer (Fluidics & System)

About the role

Illumina is hiring a Senior Product Engineer (Fluidics & System) to support product lifecycle activities, including new product introduction, product transfer and ongoing manufacturing operations. The role ensures product quality, yield and compliance through engineering evaluation, troubleshooting and continuous improvement, and drives the smooth transition from design to production.

Key responsibilities

• Support product transfer into manufacturing and drive process improvements, cost reduction and product sustaining activities
• Perform data trending and analysis, applying FMEA, DOE and statistical analysis to optimise quality and reduce costs
• Manage Engineering Change Requests and Notifications, including updates to work instructions and test requirements
• Maintain engineering drawings, BOMs, test reports, assembly procedures and validation plans
• Take part in continuous improvement and operational excellence programmes, and mentor junior staff
• For mechanical engineering: design and develop enclosure, chassis, mechanism and thermal/fluidics/optical interfaces, run FEA-lite and thermal modelling, define reliability test plans and approve fixture design changes
• Lead readiness for mass production, including PFMEA updates, process controls and test method validation
• Own SPC dashboards, CTQ monitoring and Cp/Cpk tracking, and lead troubleshooting with 8D/KT frameworks
• Authorise validation protocols and reports, and ensure change control rigor and audit readiness
• Travel to customer and supplier sites for first builds and to lead lessons learned

Required profile

• Typically 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 3 years with a Master's, or a PhD without experience
• Deep expertise in mechanical mechanisms, GD&T, tolerance analysis and DFMA, and familiarity with optics and fluidics interfaces
• Experience in fluidics system design, integration and testing, including leak testing, flow-rate verification and pressure testing
• Knowledge of lyophilisation processes and product characterisation at system and module levels
• Ability to mentor junior engineers and communicate technical information clearly to stakeholders

Required skills

• Advanced CAD and PLM systems
• Data analytics tools such as Excel, Minitab and JMP; scripting (e.g. VBA/Python) is a plus
• Familiarity with ISO 13485, IEC 61010 and design control frameworks
• Fluidics: flow control, pressure management, fluid dynamics and CFD analysis
