Senior Project Engineer - Substation Automation (Contract)

About the role

ABB is hiring a Senior Project Engineer for a contract role in Singapore, reporting to the Automation Engineering Manager. The engineer acts as design authority for an engineering discipline, carrying out engineering, implementation, testing and commissioning of substation automation systems based on ABB System 800xA, from engineering and FAT through site installation, testing and commissioning. The work model is onsite.

Key responsibilities

• Engineer and configure IEC 61850-based Electrical Substation Automation Systems, including IED configuration, SCL files, MMS reporting and GOOSE messaging
• Interpret single-line diagrams, switchgear schematics and IED documentation to prepare signal lists, IP address lists and interface details with switchgear, protection relay, ICSS and PMS suppliers
• Integrate LV/MV switchgear equipment and IEDs using industrial protocols such as IEC 61850, Modbus, Profibus and Profinet
• Prepare engineering and test documentation, including SCD files, FAT/SAT procedures, test reports, punch lists and as-built documentation
• Perform internal testing and factory acceptance tests, including signal verification, interlocking and communication tests
• Carry out pre-commissioning, commissioning and SAT at yards and offshore sites, including end-to-end checks with switchgear, ICSS and PMS
• Troubleshoot communication network and integration issues using tools such as Wireshark, IEDScout and ITT600

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or technology, major in Electrical or Electronics
• Proven hands-on experience in automation or substation automation projects in oil & gas or power, including testing and commissioning
• Self-motivated, able to work in a multi-cultural environment, with strong English communication skills

Required skills

• Working knowledge of IEC 61850 (MMS, GOOSE, SCL) and IED configuration tools such as ABB PCM600 and IET600 or equivalent
• Experience with ABB System 800xA networks or comparable DCS platforms (Honeywell, Emerson, Yokogawa) is an advantage
• Experience with ABB 800xA control builder, networking, cyber security and third-party communication via Modbus, OPC UA, Profinet and IEC 61850 is an added advantage
