Software Engineer - Traffic Light Management & Sensors

About the role

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is recruiting engineers to help build the future of Singapore's urban mobility. You will join a team modernising critical national infrastructure, working on the Next Generation Traffic Light Control System, a mission-critical project aimed at optimising traffic flow and improving road safety.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build modular, high-performance software components for production systems, using C++ for real-time, resource-constrained control logic and Python for automation, data processing and integration layers; web application development may be involved depending on experience.
• Own the end-to-end quality of your code: write comprehensive unit tests, run integration tests in simulated traffic environments, and meet the high-reliability standards needed for 24/7 operation.
• Architect modules with a cloud-ready mindset (containerisation-friendly, decoupled services) so they can integrate smoothly when the system moves to the cloud.
• Implement robust security protocols and follow "Security by Design" principles to protect national infrastructure.
• Keep learning new technologies, architectures and security practices, and collaborate with other government teams to bring in cross-agency innovations.

Required profile

• 1-3 years of experience, or a fresh graduate showing exceptional aptitude.
• A production-first mindset and strong engineering fundamentals.
• Ability to work in Linux environments and maintain high standards in version control.
• Strong analytical thinking, debugging skills and collaboration with engineers, policy officers, UX designers, cybersecurity specialists and partner agencies.
• Proactive initiative in improving reliability and security, and a sense of public service.

Required skills

• C++ for performance-critical applications, with attention to memory safety and concurrency.
• Python for internal tools and system modules.
• Java for web-based applications.
• Automated testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines and debugging tools.
