Staff Backend Engineer, Issuing Platform

About the role

Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system used by more than 675,000 businesses worldwide. Its issuing engineering team builds and operates core systems for card issuing, transaction processing and settlement, with a focus on reliability, scalability and compliance. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will design, build and evolve the most complex parts of the issuing platform as a senior individual contributor, with no direct reports. The role is based in Singapore.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and operate highly reliable, scalable systems powering real-time card transactions, taking end-to-end ownership from system design through production rollout.
• Lead the design of distributed, event-driven systems with strong guarantees of correctness, performance and resiliency, and drive architectural improvements.
• Set a high bar for code quality, testing, observability and operational readiness, and remove technical bottlenecks.
• Influence technical direction across teams through design reviews, RFCs and hands-on collaboration, and mentor senior engineers.
• Contribute to core infrastructure and shared platform capabilities, and evaluate and guide the adoption of new technologies.

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with sustained impact as a senior or staff-level individual contributor.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• Proven experience designing and operating RESTful APIs at scale, and mentoring engineers.

Required skills

• Backend development in Java, Kotlin, Go or Python.
• Large-scale distributed systems, event-driven and streaming architectures (e.g. Kafka), and domain-driven design.
• Cloud experience with GCP (preferred) or AWS, including Docker and Kubernetes.
• Observability tooling such as Splunk, Grafana and Prometheus.
• Preferred: fintech or regulated financial domain experience, and deep JVM experience with Spring or Spring Boot.
