Staff Software Engineer, Risk
airwallex · Singapore
Job description
About the role
Airwallex, the AI-native financial operating system used by more than 675,000 businesses, is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Risk Platform in Singapore. You will be a senior technical leader and hands-on builder who owns key parts of the real-time detection platform and client-facing risk and fraud management products, setting technical direction and raising the engineering bar.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the technical direction of core risk services such as real-time detection, decision engines and risk tooling, keeping them reliable, scalable and cost-efficient under high throughput and low latency.
- Design and evolve distributed, event-driven risk systems including microservices, streaming pipelines, feature stores and model-serving layers.
- Own complex initiatives end to end, from design and specifications through rollout and continuous improvement.
- Write high-quality production software mainly in Java and Spring Boot, and lead design reviews, RFCs and architecture discussions.
- Partner with the Engineering Manager and Product Manager to shape the roadmap and turn business and risk objectives into engineering solutions.
- Raise standards for code quality, observability, reliability, security and performance, and integrate models, rules and features into production with data and ML teams.
- Improve on-call readiness, incident response, postmortems, SLIs/SLOs and resilience patterns such as fallbacks, retries, timeouts and backpressure.
- Mentor senior engineers and collaborate with platform, data, SRE, security and product teams on interfaces, SLAs and ownership.
- Deliberately pay down technical debt.
Required profile
- 10+ years of back-end engineering experience, including complex distributed systems in production.
- Deep experience in risk, fraud, fintech, payments, banking, trading or another high-stakes domain.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience leading complex technical initiatives and influencing engineers and stakeholders without formal management authority.
- Comfortable owning the roadmap, making decisions with incomplete information, and working across time zones with a globally distributed team.
Required skills
- Strong Java, including multithreading, high concurrency, performance tuning and I/O/NIO, HTTP/TCP and REST.
- Spring or Spring Boot, and Gradle or Maven.
- Distributed systems: event-driven architectures, partitioning, sharding, caching and resilience patterns.
- Production experience with Docker and Kubernetes; observability, logging, metrics, tracing and incident management.
- Preferred: rule engines, feature stores, model-serving, Kafka, Flink, Spark, Cassandra, Redis, Alibaba Cloud, AWS or GCP, and machine learning in production.
