Staff Software Engineer, Spend

About the role

Airwallex, the AI-native financial operating system used by more than 675,000 businesses, is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Spend team in Singapore. You will lead the architecture and development of backend systems that support the financial operating layer for corporate cards, expenses, bills and procurement, shaping technical direction and building reliable financial workflows at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, design and evolution of complex backend systems powering Spend products, including corporate cards, expenses, bills and procurement.
• Drive cross-team technical initiatives and shape the long-term engineering strategy for scalable, secure and reliable financial workflows.
• Own backend services end to end, from discovery and design through implementation, testing, deployment, observability and maintenance.
• Raise the bar on system design, API quality, testing, reliability and performance, and help teams make sound technical trade-offs.
• Mentor engineers and work closely with Product, Design, Infrastructure, Risk and Compliance.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including technical leadership roles.
• Proven experience architecting and scaling backend systems and APIs in production.
• Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms and distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-team initiatives, comfort with ambiguity, and willingness to work across multiple countries and time zones.

Required skills

• Expertise in at least one backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go or Python.
• Deep understanding of REST API design and frameworks such as Spring Boot.
• Cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP and container orchestration such as Kubernetes.
• Preferred: observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus or Splunk, and familiarity with security and compliance in financial services.
