Veterinarian, Animal Research Facility

About the role

The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) at NTU Novena Campus is hiring a veterinarian for its animal research facility. The veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to a range of laboratory animal species, covering preventative care, diagnostics, treatment and surgery, while upholding the highest standards of veterinary medicine and animal welfare. The appointment is a 3-year contract.

Key responsibilities

• Assess sick and dead animals, including necropsy, and prescribe and administer treatment and euthanasia
• Implement, manage and refine the sentinel animal health monitoring system, and review incoming and outgoing animal health reviews and approvals
• Manage quarantine protocols, species-specific nutrition and bio-exclusion controls, and minimise pain and distress
• Advise staff and researchers on analgesics and anaesthetics, keep drug records and maintain procurement, inventory and controlled drug logbooks
• Oversee environmental enrichment and husbandry, and ensure welfare meets regulatory guidelines
• Train researchers on safe use of euthanasia chambers and anaesthetic equipment, and advise on aseptic surgical methods, fluid administration and breeding colony maintenance
• Deliver Responsible Care and Use of Animals (RCULAC) and Responsible Care and Use of Fish (RCUF) courses, and review the online theory course
• Provide expert consultation on complex surgery, aseptic technique, post-operative care and emergency critical care
• Act as veterinarian under the NACLAR Guidelines: sit on the IACUC committee, review animal use protocols and facility evaluations, monitor compliance, advise on humane endpoints and treatment plans, and train staff

Required profile

• Degree in veterinary medicine
• AVS-licensed veterinarian with 2-3 years of experience, preferably in laboratory animal care in a research setting in academia; a restricted licence or eligibility for one with 2-3 years of laboratory animal experience may also be considered
