Manufacturing Equipment Engineer 2 (Operations Intelligence)

About the role

Illumina's Manufacturing organization is hiring a Manufacturing Equipment Engineer 2 focused on operations intelligence. The engineer works on multi-disciplinary projects with software, process, equipment and manufacturing engineers to build data science solutions that improve quality, yield and cycle time, reduce variation and cost, and extend manufacturing capabilities. The role requires constant learning of frontier technologies and applying them to manufacturing operations.

Key responsibilities

• Complete required training (cGMP, safety, work instructions) and follow cGMP, quality and safety requirements.
• Develop, troubleshoot and support PLC/HMI controls, sensors and industrial communication interfaces.
• Connect equipment data with Operations Technology and Automation teams using protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profinet or SECS/GEM.
• Build and maintain equipment tag mapping, databases, APIs and data pipelines, and develop dashboards, health indicators, monitoring rules and escalation workflows.
• Apply statistical analysis, time-series methods and machine learning to anomaly detection, diagnostics and performance improvement, and support AI-assisted troubleshooting.
• Lead or support criticality assessments, FMEA, RCA, incident investigations and the move to condition-based maintenance.
• Develop models (time series, computer vision, NLP) and help deploy machine learning models with product and software teams.
• Execute small to medium projects, mentor team members on investigation and reporting, and write technical reports.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree with 2-3 years of experience in statistical modeling, data science or similar roles; CS, Math, Statistics or Engineering preferred, Master's an advantage.
• Able to undergo job rotation and cross-training, work independently and in teams, and handle multiple tasks.
• High fluency in spoken and written English, good communication and presentation skills.

Required skills

• PLC programming and troubleshooting on Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff or equivalent.
• SQL, databases, APIs, software testing, system integration and Git.
• Industrial communications, equipment data acquisition, SCADA/historian systems and OT architecture.
• Preferred: Python or R, C# and JavaScript, deep learning frameworks (Keras, TensorFlow, PyTorch), JMP/Minitab, data visualization tools, cloud computing, containerization and data warehouses.
