Project Officer (Engineering / Science / Computer Science)

About the role

The SME provides expert guidance on air traffic management (ATM), operational procedures and aviation safety so that aircraft operations are efficient, safe and compliant. The role works closely with internal and external SMEs and stakeholders to develop and validate Concepts of Operations (ConOps) for next-generation ATM systems, and supports human-in-the-loop (HITL) experiments and simulation activities. It also contributes to training, scenario development and crisis management support.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on air traffic control strategies, processes and innovations to ensure safe and efficient aircraft movement in controlled airspace.
• Work with internal and external SMEs, ATM stakeholders, safety officers and regulators to develop, refine and validate operational procedures, communication protocols and ConOps.
• Support the design, execution and evaluation of HITL experiments and simulation studies.
• Contribute to training and mentorship of research staff, sharing operational knowledge, case studies and best practices.
• Advise on integrating technological advances such as air traffic control systems (e.g. LORADS 3) to reduce flight delays.
• Take part in reviews, audits and validation of ATM ConOps and procedures for compliance with safety regulations.
• Assist in developing and implementing innovation projects to improve airspace management efficiency and sustainability.

Required profile

• Air Traffic Controller licence (past or current).
• At least 2 years of experience in air traffic control, including operational oversight and emergency procedures.
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or Computer Science.

Required skills

• Strong understanding of ATM/ATC operations, safety procedures and contingency handling.
• Ability to contribute to ConOps development and procedure validation.
• Good collaboration and communication skills.
• Strong organisational skills with attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
• Experience supporting simulations or HITL experiments.
