Research Engineer II – Air Traffic Management

About the role

The Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI) at Nanyang Technological University is seeking a Research Engineer II to develop intelligent methods and decision‑support tools for air traffic management. The role involves applying data‑driven techniques to real‑world and simulated aviation data, supporting both current and future ATM concepts.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research on algorithms and data‑driven approaches for air traffic management studies.
• Design, implement, test, and evaluate analytical models, algorithms and software tools using operational and simulated data.
• Support research activities related to airspace and traffic operations under existing and emerging ATM concepts.
• Collaborate with researchers and engineers to build prototype solutions and decision‑support applications.
• Analyse results, assess performance, and validate methods in realistic operational scenarios.
• Prepare technical reports, research papers and project deliverables; participate in meetings and reviews.
• Contribute to research proposals and related documentation as required.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Transport, Computer Science or a related discipline.
• At least three years of experience in air traffic management or a closely related field.
• Familiarity with air traffic management systems, airspace operations or related research.
• Strong written and oral communication skills for technical reporting and academic publishing.
• Excellent problem‑solving, analytical thinking and ability to work both independently and in teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency in programming for research and data analysis, preferably Python.
• Strong numerical and analytical capabilities.
