Job description
About the role
The Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, is looking for a Research Fellow to study human factors and cognitive systems in air traffic management. The focus is on operator cognitive load, situational awareness and decision-support interfaces for air traffic controllers, using methods such as eye-tracking, physiological sensing and uncertainty visualization.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct research on human factors and cognitive systems approaches to support air traffic management studies and applications.
- Design, develop and evaluate decision-support interfaces and operator-facing tools using operational and simulated data.
- Support research on controller cognitive load, situational awareness and resilience under current and future ATM concepts.
- Work with researchers and engineers to build prototype solutions and human-in-the-loop evaluation frameworks.
- Run user studies and analyse results (eye-tracking, physiological sensing) to assess tool performance and usability.
- Prepare technical reports, research papers and project deliverables, and take part in project meetings and reviews.
- Publish in top-tier journals and conferences (human-computer interaction, human factors, ATM).
- Contribute to research proposals and technical documentation as required.
Required profile
- PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Air Traffic Management, Transport or a related field.
- At least one year of relevant research experience in human factors, cognitive systems or related technical research, ideally in transport, aviation or other safety-critical domains.
- Familiarity with cognitive load assessment, decision-support interfaces or human-in-the-loop systems.
- Good written and oral communication, with the ability to write technical reports and academic papers.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal and time-management skills; able to work independently and collaboratively.
Required skills
