Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow (X-Ray Facilities)

About the role

FACTS, NTU's central shared facility specialising in characterisation using electron microscopy and X-ray techniques, is recruiting a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow. The role focuses on operating X-ray instruments, supporting users, delivering training and providing consultancy on crystal chemistry and crystallography.

Key responsibilities

• Run X-ray diffraction/scattering and/or X-ray fluorescence/photoemission spectroscopy instruments and support users with training, consultation and safe, efficient use.
• Maintain the instruments, liaise with vendor engineers and troubleshoot problems.
• Deliver courses on X-ray diffraction and/or X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, from single lectures to multi-day in-depth courses, and organise and support users with external vendors.
• Provide consultancy on crystal chemistry and crystallography for ongoing university projects, write experimental reports and paper sections, and carry out other assigned duties.

Required profile

• PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a closely related discipline with more than 4 years of experience.
• Strong expertise in crystallography, including single-crystal and powder diffraction and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis.
• Proven experience in advanced quantitative structure analysis, including Rietveld refinement, in situ/operando diffraction and total scattering/PDF techniques.
• Ability to interpret data, report scientifically and present research to diverse audiences, working independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Required skills

• Knowledge of X-ray diffraction and scattering concepts, and of advanced quantitative Rietveld, in-situ measurements and PDF analysis.
• Understanding of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy principles and ability to perform spectral and quantitative XPS analysis.
• Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
