Research Fellow – Solid Waste Valorization

About the role

The Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) at NTU seeks a Research Fellow to develop and test thermal technologies for solid waste valorization. The role focuses on laboratory experimental work involving heterogeneous catalysis, pyrolysis, and carbon capture.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct experimental work on thermal waste treatment technologies such as pyrolysis, carbon capture, and solid carbon/hydrogen generation.
• Design, procure, install, and operate experimental prototypes; investigate catalyst performance, system configuration and process conditions to optimise output yield and quality.
• Develop improvements in catalyst formulation and system design to mitigate factors reducing output quality.
• Characterise samples using techniques like N2 adsorption, Raman, FESEM, TEM, XPS, XRD, TGA, TPO, TPR, GC‑MS and interpret results.
• Liaise with project collaborators, publish research papers, document intellectual property and report progress to stakeholders.

Required profile

• PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Environmental Engineering/Science or related field.
• At least 1 year of hands‑on experience with pyrolysis, carbon capture, solid carbon or hydrogen generation.
• Familiarity with analytical techniques for solid/liquid characterisation.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency in design of experiments, result interpretation and scientific writing.
