Researcher (ML Focus) in Soft Robotics Systems
The Singapore-ETH Centre · Singapore
Job description
About the role
The Soft Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich, through the Singapore-ETH Centre, is hiring a full-time researcher in Singapore for Project Nyala, the Automated Loose Baggage Handling System for Narrow-Body Aircraft. The project, funded by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, builds a compact robotic system to automate loading and unloading of bags up to 32 kg in aircraft cargo holds with less than 1.2 m of clearance. The role is a builder's role: you will design, build and test soft robotic manipulation systems, working with mechanical design, compliant actuation, fabrication, electronics and control.
Key responsibilities
- Take soft robotic end-effectors and manipulation subsystems from concept to working prototype.
- Integrate sensing and control of the gripper into machine learning algorithms trained for dexterous manipulation of baggage.
- Design adaptive grasping strategies and manipulation algorithms, validated by systematic real-world testing and design trade studies.
- Deliver functional prototypes, integrated robotic subsystems and software solutions that meet project milestones and KPIs.
- Collaborate daily with the SUTD-led consortium, integrating SEC's end-effector and grasping technology with the perception, planning and platform work of partner institutions.
Required profile
- Master's degree or PhD in mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, electrical engineering or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience building or programming physical systems (prototyping, CAD, fabrication, electronics, robot integration, robot programming or machine learning).
- Prior research experience, such as a Master's thesis or research project, with strong written and spoken English.
- A bias toward action: building, testing and iterating quickly rather than staying in simulation.
- Background or interest in soft robotics, robotic grasping and manipulation, or bio-inspired design is a plus; experience with deformable object handling or confined-space mechanisms is a further plus.
Required skills
- Working knowledge of actuation, mechanism design, control or embedded systems, with a willingness to grow across the robotics stack.
- Machine learning for robotic control and manipulation.
What we offer
- Fixed-term contract of 2 years.
- Remuneration commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- 25 days of annual leave and 1 day of birthday leave.
- Annual dental benefits and comprehensive healthcare insurance.
- Flexible hybrid work (up to 2 days per week from home).
- Networking opportunities across disciplines and a diverse, inclusive workplace.
Applications are submitted as a single merged PDF containing a cover letter, detailed CV, transcripts, three references and representative published work.
