Staff Backend Engineer (Infrastructure)

About the role

As a member of the Application Infrastructure organization, you will join a greenfield team building a next‑generation durable execution platform for Coupang’s critical workflow systems. This highly visible service will support hundreds of domain teams and handle hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, requiring extreme reliability and scalability.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a platform that achieves 5‑6 nines (99.9999%) availability, addressing tail latency and edge‑case distributed state management.
• Integrate AI/ML models to automate predictive scaling, bottleneck detection, and intelligent error recovery.
• Solve complex problems such as distributed locking, timers, and deterministic execution while validating decisions with massive traffic data.
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to deliver infrastructure that meets business needs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Math, or a related field.
• 8+ years of backend software development experience.
• Proficiency in Java and the Spring Framework.
• Hands‑on experience with AWS cloud services.
• Proven track record building and maintaining highly available, distributed systems.
