Staff Software Engineer, Growth

About the role

Airwallex is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer for its Growth Engineering team in Singapore. Growth Engineering builds an AI-native platform that powers customer acquisition, activation, conversion, retention and expansion, connecting product, sales and marketing to drive measurable business outcomes. You will define the technical architecture and build the foundational systems that power Growth at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Drive technical strategy and architecture for critical Growth platforms, influencing engineering decisions across teams and leading complex initiatives from design through production.
• Build scalable backend infrastructure, including high-performance APIs, distributed services, event-driven architectures and real-time data processing systems.
• Develop AI-native platform capabilities that turn customer signals, product usage and lifecycle events into personalized experiences, next-best actions and automated workflows.
• Design for reliability and scale, covering performance, fault tolerance, observability, security and operational excellence.
• Translate ambiguous business challenges into technical solutions with Product, Data Science, Marketing, Sales and engineering teams.
• Elevate engineering excellence through architectural leadership, technical mentorship and design reviews.

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial backend development experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field.
• Proven staff-level technical leadership, with a track record of cross-team initiatives, architectural decisions and mentoring.
• Strong ownership, execution and ability to navigate ambiguity; comfort working in a global, distributed environment.

Required skills

• Strong proficiency in Python, Java, Kotlin or a comparable backend language, with frameworks such as FastAPI or Spring Boot.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, domain-driven design and event-driven architectures.
• Preferred: growth platforms, experimentation systems, customer segmentation engines, marketing automation or data-intensive applications.
• Preferred: AI-powered applications, LLM integration, tool orchestration and evaluation.
• Preferred: real-time data pipelines, streaming technologies, event processing, AWS or GCP, Docker and Kubernetes, Grafana, Prometheus, Splunk, and integrations across product, analytics, CRM and marketing systems.
