Workshop Technician

About the role

The Workshop Technician is responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing construction machinery and tools used in underground utilities and road works projects. The role supports site operations by ensuring equipment is ready, reliable, and compliant with safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on excavators, breakers, pipe‑laying equipment, generators and other mechanical assets.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults and execute corrective actions.
• Carry out inspections and preventive maintenance to uphold equipment reliability.
• Maintain accurate service records, equipment logs, and documentation.
• Coordinate with site and operations teams to prioritize equipment readiness.
• Assist in assembly, testing, and calibration of new or modified equipment before deployment.
• Manage tools, spare parts, and consumables inventory in the workshop.
• Follow strict safety procedures, use PPE, and keep the workshop clean.
• Provide emergency repair support for on‑site breakdowns when required.

Required profile

• NITEC/Higher NITEC or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
• Proven experience in a construction or heavy‑equipment workshop environment.
• Physically fit for hands‑on workshop work.
• Basic computer literacy for maintenance logging and communication.
• Preferably a valid Class 3 driving licence.

Required skills

• Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems.
• Ability to read technical manuals, schematics and engineering drawings.
• Problem‑solving and attention to detail.
