Assistant Director (Tech, GAIMx), AI in Medicine Institute

About the role

SingHealth's AI in Medicine Institute is looking for an Assistant Director to design, build and oversee the technical architecture of the GAIMx Generative AI platform. The role brings together multiple AI initiatives across SingHealth-Duke-NUS into a robust, trusted and scalable ecosystem that transforms clinical care and research. It is a contract position.

Key responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end development of the GAIMx solution, managing internal and external technical teams and mentoring engineering and data science teams
• Establish AI development best practices, reusable and secure AI components including domain-specific foundation models, and interoperability across healthcare systems
• Collaborate with clinicians, data stewards and compliance teams, drive vendor evaluations and proof-of-concepts, and set development SOPs and solution specifications
• Architect scalable, secure, cloud-based solutions on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform, ensuring HIPAA, PDPA and GDPR compliance
• Integrate clinical, research and operational systems via FHIR, HL7 v2, openEHR and OMOP, and design Zero Trust and NIST-aligned architectures
• Oversee identity and access management, encryption and security monitoring, and run periodic security risk assessments
• Guide microservices and API-driven architectures, build data pipelines with Spark, Kafka and Databricks, and deploy generative AI and large language models in clinical workflows
• Implement AI safety guardrails, federated learning and other privacy-preserving techniques, and promote explainable, unbiased models

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics or a related field
• 15+ years in IT/software architecture, with 5+ years in healthcare technology
• Proven expertise in software engineering, data architecture, cybersecurity and healthcare interoperability
• Strong technical leadership and communication skills, able to explain complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders
• Proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to safe, ethical AI design

Required skills

• Cloud certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Architect Expert or GCP Professional Architect
• FHIR, OMOP, openEHR and healthcare data standards
• Large language models and generative AI frameworks such as LangChain, OpenAI, Hugging Face or Vertex AI
• Clinical informatics systems such as Epic, Cerner or Meditech (advantageous)
• HIPAA, HITECH, PDPA or ISO 27001 knowledge (beneficial); published work or open-source contributions preferred
