Engineering Director

About the role

ScienTec Consulting is hiring an Engineering Director for a full-time position working Monday to Friday, with the location described as West. The role leads engineering strategy, architecture and delivery for enterprise software platforms, high transaction systems, API integrations and cloud-based solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute engineering strategies, technical roadmaps and operating models that support business growth and delivery.
• Lead architectural design and governance for enterprise software platforms, high transaction systems, API integrations and cloud-based solutions, ensuring scalability, security, availability and resilience.
• Partner with senior management, business stakeholders and clients to define technical direction and resolve complex issues.
• Lead and develop a multi-team engineering organisation of developers, architects and engineering managers, including restructuring where needed.
• Establish SDLC practices covering estimation, code reviews, automated testing, deployment and production support.
• Drive continuous improvement in productivity, code quality and delivery timelines through modern practices and automation.
• Lead the adoption of AI-assisted development tools, generative AI and agentic workflows, setting usage standards.
• Oversee delivery across internal teams and external vendors, including distributed teams.
• Foster a high-performance engineering culture through talent development, performance management and technical coaching.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related quantitative discipline.
• At least 12 years of software engineering experience and 6 years in senior technology leadership roles.
• Proven experience leading multi-team engineering organisations and managing engineering managers across distributed teams or external vendors.
• Experience in engineering governance, security by design, QA automation, CI/CD pipelines and production reliability, able to engage senior executives and enterprise clients.

Required skills

• Software architecture, distributed systems, microservices, API design and cloud-native platforms, preferably AWS, in high transaction, real-time environments.
• Practical exposure to AI-assisted software development, generative AI or agentic automation.
• Certifications in cloud architecture, information security or enterprise architecture are advantageous.
