Mechanical Engineer – Transportation Infrastructure

About the role

This entry‑level Mechanical Engineer position is based in the Office of Electrical, Mechanical, Water & Wastewater Engineering (OEMWW) at Caltrans. Working under the direction of a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to the design, specification, estimating and inspection of a wide range of transportation‑related facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop mechanical engineering designs for storm‑water drainage pumping plants, sewage lift stations, vehicular tunnels and movable bridges.
• Prepare detailed specifications and cost estimates for highway maintenance stations, toll plazas, equipment repair shops and fueling facilities.
• Conduct inspections of safety roadside rest areas, office and warehouse buildings, and vehicle/equipment storage structures.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with Caltrans standards and project schedules.
• Maintain a valid California Driver License for site visits and field inspections.

Required profile

• Entry‑level or journey‑level professional engineering background.
• Ability to work under supervision of a senior engineer and follow direction from the branch chief.
• Willingness to obtain and keep a valid California Driver License.
