Research Fellow – Agent-Based Modeling & Simulation

About the role

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Nanyang Technological University is seeking a Research Fellow to lead the Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) component of a national project on community resilience to sea‑level rise. You will design, calibrate, and validate a simulation that supports Singapore’s coastal adaptation strategies.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design, calibration, and validation of Module D – the ABM for the project.
• Integrate LCA‑based archetype outputs into ABM agent profiles.
• Develop a handover‑ready simulation interface for government agencies.
• Perform scenario planning, Monte Carlo simulations, and sensitivity analyses.
• Create workshops and training materials for agency handover of the tool.
• Contribute to project reports, conference presentations, and top‑tier journal publications.

Required profile

• PhD in Computer Science, Computational Social Science, Complex Systems, Operations Research, or a related field.
• Strong expertise in Python (Mesa) and/or NetLogo for ABM development.
• Experience with empirical ABM calibration and Monte Carlo/sensitivity analysis.
• Proven ability to develop user‑facing simulation interfaces.
• Track record of publications related to agent‑based modeling.
